Environment

Through our work, we help Europe produce materials needed for the electrification of transportation. Decarbonizing transport is among the key objectives for reaching the EU’s climate targets.

Environmental permit

Our environmental permit became legally binding in December 2024.

The environmental permit sets requirements for the scope and emissions of the activity. The Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland is responsible for our environmental permit.

Taking care of the surroundings

The surrounding environment of our plant is important to us. That is why we are committed to protecting it and exceeding some of the regulatory requirements.

Take a look at our approaches towards process water treatment, rainwater treatment, and air quality management.

Process water treatment

We will have our own process water treatment plant where the process water will be purified, ensuring it will not be discharged locally.

Rainwater treatment

In rainwater treatment, we will follow the BAT (best available technology) principle and make extra efforts beyond the set minimum requirements.

Rainwater will be divided into two catchment areas: Suuroja and Nummenjoki. We will use natural rainwater management to remove solid and harmful materials and nutrients from the rainwater. We will also have barrier structures and ponds for exceptional situations.

Moreover, we will conduct frequent measurements of the rainwater quality to ensure that rainwater discharges remain within the approved limits.

Air quality

In the environmental permit process, the authorities have estimated the air quality effects of our plant to be minor.

Air released from our plant remains well below the maximum limits set by the authorities.

The operation of our plant produces minor amounts of dust and gas into the air. The dust removal system of our production machines and our storage feature two-stage filtering processes, purifying the air before it is released.

The exhaust gas released by our roller hearth furnaces is purified with a gas scrubber and, after possible heat recovery, is directed through a 40-meter-high chimney and then into the outside air.

Together with other companies operating in Kotka, we will also participate in relevant air quality studies.

About us

Easpring Finland

Electric mobility will be one of the keys to fulfilling the carbon neutrality goals of Finland and the European Union. We are developing a battery materials plant in Kotka to produce cathode active material, which is needed to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles and other use cases.
